In photography, there's a term called "depth of field" that describes the amount of distance between the nearest and farthest objects that appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph. With a small depth of field, the subject is emphasized while the sharpness of the foreground and background diminish.
This is what my life used to look like. I knew there was more to this life of following Christ than going to church on Sundays and getting together with other Christians, but it was so out of focus that all I could see clearly was myself with all of my flaws, brokenness, and seemingly fruitless attempts to change the world around me. It was frustrating feeling alone in trying to bring everything into focus and being overwhelmed with having no idea where to start.
My journey with InterVarsity began when I went to the first meeting at Binghamton. I remember being intrigued when the president talked about InterVarsity's vision. As he described a picture of what it would look like if we made a difference on our campus, it was refreshing to see a group of students who cared deeply about the world around them and were striving together to bring God's kingdom to this earth. I was hooked and wanted to know more about being a part of something bigger than myself.
So I got involved. And while I still saw the sharpness of my weaknesses and flaws, others saw leadership potential along with a variety of gifts that could bless others. The Holy Spirit breathed new life in me as my staff worker and other brothers and sisters invested in me and invited me to lead others, changing the way I related to God, to people around me, and to the world. I even graduated from college having started a hospitality ministry, something I never imagined I would do or would change the way I serve and love those around me.
Now as an InterVarsity campus staff worker at the Rochester Institute of Technology, I can give back to Him the gifts He has graciously entrusted to me. God invites us to take part in His plans to "let His will be done on earth as it is in heaven" by restoring the world and everything in it in response to the brokenness we see all around us. I have joined InterVarsity to invite people to respond to Jesus and mobilize them to be the very answers to the prayers we lift up.
